The Mood Surrounding The Foregrounds Day to Day Life

Premise

The Foregrounds is a dystopian tragedy set on an island within the kingdom of Oshia, generations after a plague nearly wipes out the entire population.

In order to save his kingdom, King Drogo Octavious I forces the survivors of Oshia to reproduce. He believes that strong parents capable of surviving a plague will make even stronger children that are immune from plagues, or any other nasty beasts, that comes to destroy his kingdom and his people.

In present day Oshia, under King Drogo Octavious IV, the island is fully repopulated with some of the strongest people, but the system still remains. Citizens are still assigned partners by the Match Makers, and the people of Oshia are still bred for the kingdom’s benefit.

In order to control civil unrest, King Drogo Octavious IV creates what he calls “The Foregrounds,” an arena where partnered children from the ages of 14 to 17 can fight—sometimes to the death—in order to trade partners. They may do this until they turn 18.

Once one of them in said partnership turns 18, they must immediately marry, then have their first child by 20. If a couple cannot produce children, then both are simply executed. There is no room for the barren in Oshia.

In Oshia, people are resources. Children are currency. And love is an absolute liability.

Notes From The Author

The mood of my debut novel is pretty bleak.

I got the idea to write this book a little shy of of 10 years ago at the tender age of 16. It brings me great unrest and shock that my dystopian tragedy idea could ever actually be a reality. Even though this novel’s policies around marriage and child birth are reflective of the current day political landscape, that was not its intended purpose as the idea for this book came to me in a dream nearly 10 years ago.

Tragic events & the shape of modern day America aside, I still wish to continue writing this book as it is the genesis for everything that happens in the Perry B. Universe.

I really hope that those of you curious enough to take the plunge and follow me on my author journey will love this book and its characters just as much as I enjoyed finally coming around to writing it nearly 10 years from its conception.
